Fruits of the Spirit: Kindness

For the Fruits of the Spirit….Kindness” Galatians 5:22
I like to look up the Webster Dictionary definition of the Fruits of the Spirit, because I find them to be practical in understanding what is expected of those who call themselves Followers of Christ. In this case, the definition is “The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate” As we’ve seen before, this Fruits is all about Action – doing something to represent Christ to others. It is also described as “…having a pleasant disposition…”, “…care and consideration for others”.
In today’s world, the act of being kind is so wanted that we’ve created a Foundation (“Random Acts of Kindness”) and even a day, specifically designed to encourage us to be, at least for this one day, kind to one another. Wow. It speaks volumes that we need that reminder, doesn’t it? Let’s look at some of the suggested act:Paying it forward at the coffee shopHelping someone change a flat tireTaking muffins to workBuying extra at the grocery store and giving to a food pantryYes, I believe we all would consider this acts of kindness. But they shouldn’t be random. As Christians, we’re instructed that this should be part of our character.
You see, kindness is an action that look outwardly and, with open arms, says, “How may I express my friendship to you?” “How can I give more than what is necessary or expected?” “What is the consideration I can show to you?”
Father, your Word can sometimes be easy to read but difficult to put into action. Not because they are challenging in and of themselves, but because our flesh does rebel at being subservient to Your perfect will. In this case, to show kindness to others. In every situation and circumstance. Please, by Your Holy Spirit, help us to be friendly, generous, and considerate in our expression of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
